How weighted grades work
In a weighted class, categories contribute in fixed proportions no matter how many assignments each one holds. Ten homeworks worth 20% together still move your grade less than one midterm worth 25%. Your grade is:
When the weights don't add up to 100
Mid-semester they usually don't — the final hasn't happened. This calculator averages over the weight you've actually entered and tells you how much of the class that covers, instead of silently treating missing categories as zeros. If the weights on your syllabus genuinely don't sum to 100, that's worth an email to your instructor before it's worth a calculator.
Where the numbers live in your syllabus
Look for a table headed “Grading” or “Assessment.” You need two things per row: the category name and its percentage. Inside a category, unless the syllabus says otherwise, the score is the plain average of its assignments. Two traps worth checking: whether the final exam sits inside a category or has its own weight, and whether any scores get dropped — both change what to type here.
